Indigenous Writing, Art Cover Prize and Students Awards

Categories
The $3000.00 Borderlands Prize is made up of three smaller prizes:

  • 1 x First Nations Writing Award (prose up to 2000 words)
  • 1 x Art Cover Prize (A5)
  • 2 x Student Awards (high school and tertiary)

Entry to Borderlands Awards & Prizes is free. To enter, email your piece to [email protected] with the name of the prize category in the subject line. If you are entering the Student Award please email us from your student email account. Please read the guidelines for each category below and ensure eligibility before submitting.

Judging
Each category will be judged anonymously by two judges. Information about the judges for each category can be found below. Please ensure your name cannot be found anywhere on your document or file for submission to ensure anonymity. 
Borderlands encourages talented and creative artists to test their ideas and skills in a supportive and communal way. The purpose of the Borderlands Prize is to showcase the best Territory talent to the world and to financially acknowledge artists for their hard work.

First Nations Writing Award ($1000.00)
Judges: Yvette Holt and Marie Munkara

This award is open to ALL First Nation writers across Australia. We are seeking memoir, short story, essay or experimental text (up to 2000 words).
Submissions are not to be under consideration anywhere else or in the running for any other award. The award is not limited to a specific theme and the winner will be published in the first print issue of Borderlands in May.

The deadline for the First Nations Writing Award is 23 February 2020 and all submissions should be emailed to [email protected] with the award category ‘First Nations Writing Award’ in the subject heading of your email. Please include the title of the work, your name, address, phone number and a 50 word bio in the body of your email, and include your submission as an attached document (without identification) to the email.

You may submit more than one piece, but please send through each individual piece in a separate email. You will find our submission guidelines at borderlands.cdu.edu.au/prizes

Cover Art Prize ($1000.00)
Judges: Dr Birut Zemits and Rod Moss
If you’re an illustrator, painter, cartoonist, digital designer or wicked photographer we’re looking for you! The Borderlands Cover Art Prize is open to all artists living in the Northern Territory or have a legacy connection with the NT. While there is not a specific theme for the magazine’s first issue, it is desirable that the design of the first print cover should represent something special about where we live and who we are. Indigenous artists are encouraged to apply.
Entries should not be under consideration elsewhere or be entered in any other competition.

Submissions should be appropriate for an A5 journal cover to fit 216mm x 154mm for trimming and text overlay at the time of printing. 

Please submit entries as both a JPG and PDF email attachment to [email protected] with the category name ‘Cover Art Prize’ in the subject title. Please include the title of the work, your name, address, phone number and 50 word bio in the body of the email. Please do not include your name on the artwork for judging purposes.

Students Prize (High School $500 and Tertiary $500)

Judges: Dr Nicola Rolls and Jeremy Garnett
This award is open to all students in the Northern Territory attending high school or higher education at Charles Darwin University or the Batchelor Institute. This award is open genre and includes poetry (up to 50 lines), prose and non-fiction (up to 1500 words), cartoons, comics, animations or artwork. 

Winners will appear on a new student portal on the Borderlands webpage later in the year. The deadline for submissions is 23 March and all entries should be emailed to [email protected] with ‘Student Prize high school [or] tertiary’ as the subject heading from your CDU/BI or secondary school student email account. Please include the title of the work, your name, phone number, address and 50 word bio in the body of the email. Please do not include your name on your submission.
