Focus on Fiction: Literary Imaginings for Change

In its 45th year of continuous publication Social Alternatives seeks to again focus on fiction. Literary fiction’s power to speak to the journal’s objective to advocate for principles of social justice and alternatives to current conditions has always been central. Each quarterly edition has featured both short stories and poetry from our inception. In the last decade Social Alternatives had special issues on Utopian fiction and the role of the nonhuman in fiction.

Now we seek to showcase a broad range of perspectives on the interventions that contemporary fiction is making in public debates on contemporary social, political, economic, and environmental issues. The turnaround for submission is tight for reasons beyond the journal’s control. Nonetheless, this is an opportunity for a broad ambit to reflect the diversity in current literary scholarly research at this time of social and political change. Complete submissions are due by 5pm AEST Friday August 5 2022, for publication in November 2022.

Submissions should include:

• separate cover letter and bio
• a document with summative abstract of 150-200 words and 3-4 key words
• fully de-identified article of 3000 to 5000 words For Social Alternative
